Counter Spy Anti Spyware – Spyware Detection Removal

Counter spy sounds like the name of a really cool counter espionage movie, but really a great piece of antispyware or a spyware removal program. Counter Spy is powerful, small, and quick in comparison to most free spyware removal programs. Counter Spy comes in a tidy 12Mb installer and it costs $19.95, which is about $20 less than the competition. There is a free trial period of 15 days for you to try this award winning software. Counter Spy features several great features, the ability to actively monitor kernel processes, root kit protection, and advanced protection from malware. The product’s maker, Sun Belt Software boasts that it has a small memory foot print. These great features lead Counter Spy to win the CNet Editor’s choice award in 2007.

Counter Spy’s impressive features are all presented in a tidy interface; the interface is quite informative and does not follow the standard layout. Most spyware removal programs have all the options on the left so I found this feature particularly refreshing. The main options are presented to the user via four buttons in the upper right hand corner. The main screen displays when the last scan was run, how high the “World Wide Threat Level” is for spyware and malware, and if you need to update. Clicking around the four options will present you with all sorts of functionality. There is also a nice feature which tells you how many threats have been neutralized by the software. This intuitive interface makes the software very easy to learn to use. Because of its small footprint, it won’t bog down the computer as much, when I tested it versus Norton antivirus, I found that Counter Spy was about a third of the size totally installed and probably ten times faster. Using it was very fun. Counter Spy Antispyware correctly identified and disposed of all of the threats on the computer.

Now, I would like to touch on Sun Belt’s support, which I think is a key component in getting the most out of the software. They host a 118 page user guide for the software and by today’s standards, that’s a big rarity (old ways are best!). Their online knowledge-base is also top notch, you can read it from their website under the research or support tool box. For a spyware removal company they are top notch!

Sunbelt now offer Counter Spy’s big brother, called VIPRE. I have no idea what VIPRE stands for, and despite that small glitch, I really like this improvement on Counter Spy. VIPRE uses the same engine, so it’s small and very fast. They add support for netbooks and improved support for e-mail borne threats. VIPRE is a great update from Counter Spy. Some key improvements are an improved heuristics engine which is tuned to find threats faster, they have virtualized lockbox which is essentially a small amount of memory that is reserved for the program, this virtualization feature hides a small amount of RAM from the computer so the malware thinks it has control over the computer but then, the program can break out of its jail and neutralize the threat. If you are looking for a free spyware removal program this one isn’t it because it costs money but for a good reason. Counter Spy trumps most free spyware removal programs and in my opinion is well worth the money.
